Maithripala Sirisena – Another Gem for Sri Lanka

The high-pitched election in the island nation has reached its climax. Mahinda Rajapaksa, the outgoing President has conceded his defeat to Pallewatte Gamaralalage Maithripala Yapa Sirisena. Both candidates, efficient and achievers in their own ways, the choice of the best between the two would have been an extremely difficult affair for Srilankans. Sirisena the newly President-elect of the island nation started his innings as a low profile Minister in the Sri Lankan Government. Born on 03rd September 1951, Sirisena joined mainstream politics in 1989 through the Sri Lankan Freedom Party. A staunch supporter of united Sri Lanka, he was a soft target for the Tamil Tiger rebels with the separatists trying to assassinate him on at least five times. He has been extremely vocal when it comes to the cause of the rural population. The new President-elect is known for his leanings towards an investor free and free market policy.

Rajapaksa’s presidential tenure has witnessed several epoch making events in the island nation. It is during his tenure that the LTTE was finally militarily over powered in May 2009. Since then the external affairs ministry of the island nation have been reaching out to all parts of the globe. Coming out of the shell as it remained during the earlier times, Sri Lanka has asserted its place as one of the prominent countries on the world map. The outgoing President has also commenced a massive rehabilitation programme only to be carried forward by his predecessor in office. Mahinda Rajapaksa demits office, leaving behind him a list of accomplishments.

Let us hope that Maithripala Sirisena makes an indelible mark in the progress of the island nation. Wish him all the best in his new innings.
